insignificant man- evän, Electricsheep42, No Mic
--
The history of trios has often been one not only held together by greatness but also the ability to harmonise three different minds in a push to engage creative ingenuity. Just think about a few of them: TLC, Run DMC, Hanson, Powerpuff Girls, the BLT, proves my point doesn’t it?
And the trio I listen to of this moment is no different than the esteemed names above, names that I may just have randomly plopped out. insignificant man comes from the collective minds of, evän, Electricsheep42, No Mic catchily named for this project as evän, Electricsheep42, No Mic. Within this beat they have been able to create a piece of music that provides our ears with what can only be described as a smorgasbord of a four seasons pizza.
(It’s important to note at this point that as a writer there are two crucial lessons to be learned here; one, is not to mix up your numbers when trying to link two different sets of imagery and two, is not to mix up your exotic food analogies…… anyway, moving on.)
The beat in question “insignificant man” by Messrs. van, Sheep and Mic is less like a four seasons pizza and more like a pizza with four wings that gently flies around in the background of that daydream you had about Mr Weir the chemistry teacher setting up a library with Bowie in a smoky swamp just outside the labyrinth.
Even though the dreaminess of this beat is obvious, but it is still a lovely, smoky dreaminess, as the main synth floats throughout as a reassuring, repeating choir, like a friendly beast guiding you by the hand. It is later joined by less a friend and more of a “c’mon follow me wee one” little goblin of a melody, a sweetly played, little whistleable tune, the two sit together so well and so nicely but also seem to come from completely different sides of the tracks, the effect is immediate but also long lasting, and despite the shortness of this beat the contrasting style adds a kinda deep end, depth to the beat overall.
In contrast the drums are clear and sparse and almost in congress with the rest of the music, it however is this simpleness and almost emptiness of the rhythm that fits this beat perfectly. The drums’ cleanness is perhaps there to remind you that even though dreams are nice and all it’ll soon be time to wake up, and let’s thank the heavens for that cos we all know that those of us who dream for too long usually wake up covered in piss, pc.
